Fall Family Photos at Confluence park

Updated: Sep 10, 2022

This was the photo session that almost never happened. I am SO happy it did!

The first date we picked for their family photos ended up smack dab in the middle of a heat wave. Their fall photos would have taken place in 90 degree weather. So we picked another date later in the month hoping it would be cooler.

When the next date rolled around the weather forecast was for highs in the 50s and raining. Complete opposite. Luckily we were able to move it to another day that week when the weather would be nice and sunny (though there was a wind advisory for most of the day). Then, as I made my way to their session, leaving early in case there was traffic downtown, I got stuck in traffic. Bad bad traffic. All of the highway ramps were closed near my house, so I was stuck on the access road for 30 minutes and moved 5 miles. Fearing we'd have to reschedule again, I gave this wonderful family a call and luckily they agreed to wait until I could arrive rather than picking another date.

We had a wonderful time walking around Confluence Park, taking our time to take photos at different spots and making the most of the golden hour. Their two boys were so energetic and in between quieter photo ops, we let them run, jump, and climb (safely of course).

There are a few photos in there gallery where you can see my method of photographing families with active kids. Sometimes a kid doesn't want to be in the photo, or they want to climb on something, or they want to play rather than stand still. So I let them. You can see where their youngest decided he wanted to wander around rather than be in photo. But he comes back to join the fun. If kids want to play, I photograph them as they do. No moment is wasted and everything your kids do is an opportunity to create a lasting image. If your little one wants to walk like a zombie behind your beautiful pose, I will photograph it. And it will be one my favorite photos.

October through December is the busiest time of the year for Photographers (weather is cooler, golden hour occurs earlier, holidays are around the corner). If you want to make sure your get your family photos done in time for Holiday cards, make sure to book your session well in advance. I recommend booking at least 2-3 months in advance. But you can book as early as you want! Weather is unpredictable whether you book 2 weeks in advance or 7 months, so it's better to get a session on the books early and reschedule due to weather than to never get to book at all.
